The Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists organization now has medals commemorating the September visit of Pope Francis to America. They are available for sale through the association website at www.pancoins.org.

The design of the PAN medal commemorating Pope Francis' visit to America.

PAN President, Tom Uram presented the idea for the medal to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington at a meeting on Jan. 28 2015.

The archdiocese agreed that such an idea should be executed with a high level of quality and care.

Uram immediately commissioned U.S. Mint sculptor and engraver Don Everhart to create the obverse and reverse of the medal.

The artwork was put forward as time became critical. To be able to reach a design agreement and allow enough time for Everhart to sculpt it and get it into production became a formidable challenge, Uram said, but in the end was successfully accomplished.

The essence of the medal focuses on the Pope’s visit to Washington D.C. on Sept. 23.

“Don produced a beautiful image of Pope Francis that captures his warmth and charm on the obverse and a reverse that features the three Washington D.C. iconic domes, the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle, and the dome of the U.S. Capitol building,” Uram said.

The medals were produced at the Northwest Territorial Mint.

The sizes and pricing are: three-inch silver with black enamel and 24-karat gold embellishment at $450, three-inch bronze with black enamel at $100, 1.75-inch silver with gold embellishment at $150, and 1.75-inch bronze at $30.

The three-inch medals are housed in a beautiful custom wooden box.

For the 1.75-inch medals, a descriptive bi-fold is used.
