Stark Reality: Getting Things Right or Making Changes—Argentina’s Coin Prices Reexamined

Argentina’s coin pricing gets major update in 2025 review.

We at NumisMaster have recently begun a 52-week comprehensive pricing review for numerous countries, starting with Central and South America. The first country on our list is Argentina, and we have consulted with experts and reviewed auction and sales results to realign many prices to their correct values.

Focusing on the issues from the 20th century, we found that pricing for 1- and 2-centavos was greatly undervalued, especially for rare years. Pricing was raised in a widespread manner for these denominations. One such example of drastic changes can be seen with the 1945 1-centavo, the key date for the KM# 37a type. Previously, prices ranged from 20¢ in Fine to $4.50 in Mint State 63 (MS-63). Now prices have been adjusted to $10 in Fine and $65 in MS-63.

Pricing for the much more common 1946-dated example previously topped out at $3.50 and has been adjusted to $5. Pricing was also raised to reflect the real market value of the 5-centavo coins, particularly the earlier issues. However, not all pricing was too low—10 centavos from the early years were greatly overvalued, and the only pricing for these coins that was raised was for those in high grades, when known. Pricing for 20-centavo coins was mostly on target but still required some adjustments.

What we are grappling with, and haven’t addressed in these updates to Argentina, is how to indicate the rarity of certain coins in specific grades. Regarding the 50 centavos of the 1950s, the prices are outdated; however, in grades ranging from MS-63 to MS-65 and higher, these coins don’t enter the market frequently enough to offer meaningful comparisons for designating a price. This is imperfect, but we’re moving in the right direction. We welcome the option to coordinate with additional experts for future changes across all countries, past and present.
