An example of the largest banknote ever issued – measuring 35cm x 21.5cm - will be offered by Noonans Mayfair in a sale of World Banknotes on Wednesday, August 28, 2024. Printed in 1998 by the Central Bank of the Philippines as a commemorative 100,000 Piso note, it is expected to fetch £5,000-6,000.

As Thomasina Smith, Worldwide Head of Numismatics at Noonans commented: “This is a scarce opportunity to obtain a superb example of the largest banknote ever issued! This very large note was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Philippine independence in 1998 and bears the special serial number of 786 which is considered to be lucky and holy in Islamic countries.”

She continued: “To put this into context, a standard piece of A4 paper is only around 30cm x 20cm, really highlighting how massive this note is. The note was legal tender but has a face value well over £1,000, making it somewhat difficult to spend!”
