Year of Carson City coin celebrated by C4OA club

In the fall-winter 2012 issue of Curry’s Chronicle, the award-winning journal of the Carson City Coin Collectors of America, members recount events from a remarkable year for their numismatic niche. Club writers contributed articles that cover the before-, during-, and after-events of the historic sale of the Battle Born collection of Carson City coins.

Bruce Thayer, one of the members who attended the Battle Born auction at the ANA’s World’s Fair of Money convention in Philadelphia, writes in his article, “Three Days in August – Battle Born Week in Philadelphia,” that this event was his “only chance to participate in an Eliasberg-caliber numismatic event.”

Fellow member Michael “The Drummer” Parrott describes in his article, “A Journey of Discovery and a Room with a View – My Up-Close Experience with the Battle Born Collection,” how he and Thayer enjoyed a special lot-viewing session of the Battle Born coins compliments of auction company Stack’s Bowers Galleries. Parrott reflects that “it was difficult to truly comprehend what Bruce and I were viewing” in terms of the significance of the coins in the Battle Born collection.

Rusty Goe, in his article, “One Night in Philadelphia with the Battle Born Collection of Carson City Coins,” gives his take on the results of the Battle Born sale. He identifies the coins that did “better than, worse than, or as expected.”

As for post-Battle Born sale events, C4OA members Bruce Thayer, Michael Parrott, and Mark Archambault took a team-approach to writing about the club’s 2012 western regional meeting, which was held at the Carson Nugget Casino, in conjunction with the Nevada State Museum’s annual coin show in Carson City, just two weeks after the Philadelphia ANA. Thayer expressed his satisfaction with the overall success of the regional meeting and dinner. Parrott told how “the entire afternoon and evening were charged with excitement and energy.” Archambault wrote in his article, “My First C4OA Regional Meeting – Carson City, NV, 2012,” how he “had the time of [his] life and learned some great information from the other members about our favorite subject.”

Also in this issue, Seated Liberty half dollar specialist Bill Bugert apprised members of the three new “CC” half dollar die marriages discovered since the publication of his latest book on that subject. Archambault, in his second article of the journal, discusses the completion of his 10-piece Carson City half dollar set and Weimar White evaluates Mint State 1876-CC $20 gold pieces.
