A 1934 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note from the Binion Horsehoe casino $1 million display is expected to bring $100,000 to $150,000 in Stack’s Bowers Galleries upcoming sale. The Fr. 2231-B note, graded PCGS Very Choice New 64 Apparent, Minor Restorations, is part of the firm’s official auction for the Whitman Baltimore Expo, March 31-April 3, at the Baltimore Convention Center. The paper money portion of the sale is on March 31. An Internet-only currency sale is slated for April 4.
Another top lot, estimated at $80,000 to $100,000, is a 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note, Chicago, in PMG Extremely Fine 40 Net, Splits, Internal Tear.
New to the census, the Fr. 2221-G features serial G00001181A and had a print run of only 6,600. “With both the 1928 and 1932 series combined, there are roughly 210 notes known for the denomination, and only a select few collections will have the opportunity to illustrate this majestic bill,” according to the cataloger.
Another 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note, Fr. 2221-J, is one of only six known from the Kansas District. It’s graded PMG Very Fine 25 Net, Repaired & Reconstructed, and estimated at $70,000 to $90,000.
Among National Bank Notes, an 1882 $5 No. 1 Brown Back, Fr. 471, on The First National Bank of Fernandina, Fla., charter 4558, “was recently discovered in North Carolina with a fourth generation family member of the bank’s president.” The note is graded PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45 and, according to the cataloger, “arguably becomes the finest $5 1882 brown back known to exist for the state of Florida.” It’s estimated at $40,000 to $60,000.
Another discovery, unique for bank and town, is a 1902 $5 Plain Back from the First National Bank of Adair, Iowa, Fr. 600, charter 8699. The rarity is graded PMG Choice Fine 15, and described as, “One of the most important Iowa discoveries in recent years and a charter that is currently missing in every collection with the bank being unreported prior to this discovery.” It’s estimated at $20,000 to $30,000.
Also crossing the block is a newly discovered uncut $10-10-10-20 sheet of four large-size serial No. 1 notes on the Security National Bank of West Minneapolis, Minn. The 1902 Plain Back sheet, Fr. 635 and 661, charter 12518, is graded PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45. “This is the first time this all serial #1 uncut sheet of blue seals from The Security National Bank of West Minneapolis has been seen by the collecting community,” noted the cataloger. “It was held by the same banking family since it was first signed in the 1920s.” Estimate is $30,000 to $40,000.
