The annual dinner of the Milwaukee (Wis.) Numismatic Society held Oct. 27, featured a speech by Numismatic News editor David C. Harper.
Having just passed the 60th anniversary of the first issue of Numismatic News, Harper looked back and then looked forward as rapid technological changes are affecting how newspapers, auction houses and numismatic clubs and associations organize themselves and conduct their businesses and membership functions.
At the root are the unchanging desires of collectors to find coins to collect, to price them accurately and to buy and sell them. The way collectors choose to fulfill those desires is what will keep everybody on their toes in the coming years.
Just as founder Chet Krause sought the advice of MNS members before he began his hobby newspaper in 1952, Harper seeks their advice on how he can fulfill their needs in the future.
The dinner was organized and emceed by James Heinrich.
Betty Petrovick recognized exhibitors who won awards at the club’s annual show in September.
Bruce Bartelt won Best of Show. Darrell Luedtke took second place and Dave Hunsicker was third. Junior exhibit winner went to Jason Paonessa.
President Leon Saryan honored the club’s volunteers and he said that he would likely step down in January to be succeeded by Vice President Justin Perrault.
