Gold tops Baltimore sale

Selling for $188,000 on Nov. 5 was a Proof-65+ 1879 Flowing Hair $4 Stella gold piece at Stack’s Bowers Galleries official auction at the Whitman Coins & Collectibles Baltimore Expo.

The Professional Coin Grading Service-certified rarity was a highlight of the Rarities Night portion of the auction.

For the U.S. coin portion of the sale, over $5 million was realized while the U.S. paper money and world coin lots brought the final total to over $7.9 million.

Prices reported here included a 17.5 percent buyer’s fee.

Another specimen of the $4 gold rarity but graded Proof-62 by PCGS sold for $135,125. This coin also had a Certified Acceptance Corporation sticker on the slab.

A Proof-67 1914 Indian $5 gold piece sold for $111,625.

U.S Coin Digest continues to be a great reference for any U.S. coin collector.

Fetching $86,538 was a PCGS AU-58 1796 Capped Bust Right $10 gold piece.

Another gold $10, a 1799 Capped Bust Right piece, certified MS-63+ by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, reached $44,062.

Highlights among silver coins included $49,937 realized by a 1795 Flowing hair half dollar graded NGC VG-10. It is one of just four halves known with a Mint-made silver plug.

Among Morgan silver dollars, a PCGS MS-67 1882 brought $21,150. The multi-day, multi-session auction also featured medals from the John W. Adams Collection.

A 1787 Columbia and Washington medal in bronze, of which only six to eight are known, realized $32,900.

Selling for $30,550 was a silver 1783 Peace of Versailles/Libertas Americana medal.

A 1777 Battle of Germantown silver medal saw the gavel come down at $22,325.
