Georgia show attracks bigger crowd

Over 1,800 people attended the Georgia Numismatic Association’s 49th Coin and Currency Show held April 19-21 in Dalton.

Over 1,800 people attended the Georgia Numismatic Association’s 49th Coin and Currency Show held April 19-21 in Dalton.

Bourse Manager Chip Cutcliff stated that this year’s show set a new record in public attendance and was a 22 percent increase over the 2012 show.

The ribbon was cut April 19 by Rod Gillis and Doug Mudd of the American Numismatic Association, who brought the ANA’s 1913 Liberty Head nickel and 1804 dollar for display.

There were 60 display cases of collector exhibits. Exhibit Manager Carl Lester said that this was the largest number ever at a GNA Show.

First Place was won by Lavonda Proveaux for “State of Georgia Currency Errors, 1862-1865”

Second place was claimed by Mack Martin, “Antebellum Banking History of Athens, Ga.”

Martin also took third place with “James Barton Longacre – Fourth Engraver of the U.S. Mint.”

In the Junior category, First Place went to Myriam Saldarriaga for “Ten Little Indians.”

Second Place was won by Hampton Barrineau for“The Story of the Lincoln Cent.”

Third Place was taken by Ella Harris with “Coins That Honor Flight.”

Bob Hartje, GNA Young Numismatists Show Program Manager, said that a record number of 55 YNs participated April 20.

Bob led a group in a skit on history for the adults and YNs in attendance. At the end of the program, all YNs received a bag of numismatic items that were donated by coin dealers and GNA members at the show.
