Casino Chip Club exhibits at ANA Money Show
The Casino Chip & Gaming Token Collectors Club displayed its new exhibit on casino memorabilia at the American Numismatic Association’s National Money Show in Dallas, Texas, Oct. 18-20.
The club was represented by President Doug Smith, Youth Program Director Belinda Hixon and Al Whiting.
“The club’s goal was to introduce those who are already numismatic collectors to the world of casino collecting,” Smith said. “The colorful display of high denomination European plaques, vintage Vegas chips, ivories, and antique chips were a big hit and really caught people’s eyes as our table really stuck out from the other dealers.”
The most common response from people, Smith said, was “Wow, people collect those things?”
“It brought back a lot of memories of Vegas for those who talked with us and kindled an interest to start collecting casino memorabilia as it’s so closely related to numismatic collecting,” he said.
The hobby has expanded into literally every aspect of gaming in America and the world. No item too small or too large that has an identifiable logo or casino name attached to it goes uncollected, Smith said.
Items that have become collectible include poker chips, casino chips, antique gaming chips, dice, match books, ashtrays, postcards, napkins, coasters, menus, plaques, silver strikes, table layouts for roulette, blackjack and craps, actual signs from the casinos, the glass fronts to slot machines, and of course the slot machines themselves. The joke is that there is nothing out of bounds, Smith said.
The 21st annual convention will take place in Las Vegas at the Southpoint Hotel, Casino & Spa June 19-22, 2013. It will be open to the public by paid admission starting on June 20.
