AIA auction begins on Wall Street

Archives International Auctions 21st sale will be spread over two days. Part I will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Museum of American Finance in conjunction with the Wall Street Currency, Scripophily and Collectibles Show. Part 2 will be held in AIA’s Fort Lee offices, N.J, on Tuesday, Nov. 4.

Right up front on Oct. 25 is an unusual AU/UNC snorter that should delight World War II buffs: a 1937 one chervonetz originating from the Yalta Conference and signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Hopkins and Dewey Long among others.

Part 2 consists of a substantial number of world and U.S. notes, many in high grade. Among the circulation issues are trials, proofs, specimens, and vignette proofs plus some delightful rarities.

Along with numerous scrip, colonial, obsolete, and CSA issues, U.S. collectors may wish to check out:

• U.S. Treasury, Assistant Treasurer, Gold Certificate, uncut pair, VF;

• Federal Reserve, small $5, $10, $20 specimens, 1934, Fr. 1960D, Fr. 2009G, Fr. 2058B, PCGS Gem New 65, 66, 63;

• National Bank Alexander City, $5 uncut sheet of six, 1929, Fr. 800-2, AU;

• Freeport National $5, 1902 Plain Back, serial No. 1, Fr. 598, PMG Choice Very Fine 30.

And for those into U.S. errors there is an inverted back 1934A $10 Federal Reserve Note graded PMG Very Fine 25 Net.

For world paper collectors most should be able to find something to whet their appetites among the large range on offer. Some of the eye-catching rarities include:

• Danish West Indies, National Bank, five francs specimen, 1905, P-17s, PMG Choice 64;

• Denmark, Copenhagen Exchange and Mortgage Bank, one rigsdaler 1762, VF-XF;

• Mexico, Bono De Caja, El Banco Central Mexicano, 100 pesos specimen 1899, NIP, AU-UNC;

• Pakistan, State Bank, presentation booklet one, five, 10, 50 100 rupees specimens 1973-78, P-20, -21, -22, -24, -24A, UNC;

• Paraguay, El Banco Nacional 50 pesos front, back proofs 1886, P-S150, PMG UNC 62.

But top of the pops in this catalog must be the stunning sequential pair of issued Palestine Currency Board £10s of 1939, P-9c. Both are graded PMG Choice Uncirculated 64. The highest grade assigned by PMG to 36 previous Palestinian 1939 £10s they have examined is AU 55. Any pundit out there like to hazard an estimate on the likely price realized?
