The Low Country Coin Club held its inauguration dinner Dec. 5 at the Golden Coral Buffet in North Charleston, S.C., with more than 60 club members and guests attending.
Richard Smith, who begins his second year as club president, hosted the gathering. Other officers welcomed at the dinner were Susan Baker, incoming vice president; Chris Staubs, who continues his duties as secretary for a second term, and Burnie Acuff, who continues as club treasurer.
New board members attending were Tony Dantzler, Chris Bellew, Frank Harris, Alex Gilchrist and Arthur Darr.
Tony Chibbaro, president of the Midland Coin Club and Carolina Token Society presented a historical view on tokens of Fort Sumter. The tokens he presented began with the medals awarded the Union soldiers holding the fort when the war began and continued through commemorative tokens still offered today.
Bill Latour was named Member of the Year for his service the past six years as a club officers, as well as his work at many of the coin shows held by the club. Latour has also given time and money working with Young Numismatists in the Charleston area and throughout South Carolina. He was also active in the Low Country Club when stationed in Charleston with the Navy in the late 1980s and 1990s.
