1934 $5,000 FRN leads FUN auction

A 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note, Fr. 2221-K, took the banner price in Heritage Auctions’ Currency Signature Auction Platinum Night sale, Jan. 7, in Orlando, Fla. Graded PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ, the note sold for $223,250 in the firm’s auction at the Florida United Numismatists show. According to the cataloger, only 2,400 of the notes were issued and printed by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and “nothing in Gem has been offered at public auction in at least 6 years.”

This 1934 Dallas district $5,000 in PCGS Very Choice New 65PPQ brought $223,250.

Prices include the 17.5 percent buyer’s premium.

Gathering in $188,000 was an ex-Binion Hoard 1934 $10,000, Fr. 2231-B, in PCGS Apparent Very Choice New 64. “Despite nearly a decade of printing and issuing $10000’s, the New York district only managed to put 11,520 notes into circulation and since most were bank controlled, they were redeemed in large numbers.”

An ex-Binion Hoard 1934 $10,000 went for $188,000.

Another 1934 FRN, a $5,000, Fr. 2221-B, in PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 went for $164,500. While a Richmond district 1934 $5,000, Fr. 221-E, in PMG Very Fine 25 brought a like amount.

A unique $50/$100 1902 Red Seal sheet, Fr. 664/686, from the First National Bank of Huron, S.D., in Choice About New 55PPQ Hole Punch Cancelled sold for $152,750. Hailing from the estate of L. DuBois, director of the Swiss Bankverein (now UBS) and member of the board of the Swiss National Railway Co. in 1902, the uncut $50 and $100 Red Seal sheet is overstamped vertically on the left side in black ink, “Specimen for Swiss Department of Finance.”

Among obsoletes in the sale, from the Alan Dorris Collection of Georgia Obsolete Currency, an Oct. 1, 1857 Bank of Commerce, Savannah, Ga. $500 proof, G18a, believe to be unique and graded PCGS Superb Gem New 68PPQ, sold for $56,400.

$50/$100 1902 Red Seal sheet on the First National Bank of Huron, S.D. that sold for $152,750.

• 1870 $5 The First National Gold Bank of San Francisco, Calif., charter 1741, Fr. 1136, PCGS Extremely Fine 40PPQ, $70,500;

• 1928 $1,000 Gold Certificate, Fr. 2408, PCGS Gem New 65, $61,687.50.
