Rare early federal coinage will highlight Heritage’s official Central States Numismatic Society Convention Signature Auction April 27-May 1 in Schaumburg, Ill.
“We’re featuring two dismes that are pattern issues produced by the Mint,” said Greg Rohan, president of Heritage Auctions.
The first of the two dismes is the finest known Judd 10 1792 graded SP-64 Brown Professional Coin Grading Service Secure.
Heritage said it is ex: Garrett-Simpson and is an incredible artifact of the first days of the United States in the form of one of the first coins minted.
The second piece is Judd 9, the finest known 1792 silver disme with the obverse legend “Liberty Parent of Science and Indus.” It is graded AU-50 PCGS Secure and is ex: Judd-Donald G. Partrick Collection.
Another 1792 rarity in the Heritage auction is a half disme. Numismatic Guaranty Corporation graded it MS-63.
Heritage noted that “while it is still believed by many that Martha Washington herself, America’s first First Lady, was the model for the figure of Liberty, we do know that the coins were struck from Washington’s Sheffield silver plate, and that Gen. Washington and Martha were in attendance when the coins were presented, making it a distinct possibility that America’s first President may have held this very coin.”
A 1793 Cohen-3 half cent graded MS-64 Brown PCGS Secure will also go on the block in Schaumburg.
Other lots to be featured in the sale include a pewter Continental dollar. Dated 1776, the coin is MS-65 PCGS Secure.
The finest of just four known 1839-O Reeded Edge half dollars also will be in the auction. It is a Branch Mint PR-65.
Running concurrently with the coin auction at the CSNS convention will be a Heritage Currency Signature Auction.
The highlight note is a $50 1869 Legal Tender Note that PMG graded About Uncirculated 55. It is expected to bring $175,000 or more.
