What is your favorite part of the coin collecting hobby?

The diversity and ease of collecting coins. Any one from a young child to a wheelchair-confined person can have fun collecting. You really don’t need much to get started, just a few coins! Or dollars.

My favorite part of the hobby is the learning of national and foreign history.

Part of the interest I have is that I ended up is with a packet of Dutch VOC coins from the 1700s, which was the time when the Dutch ran the international money market. So here is a packet of 200 years and older coins have been around. What sights had they seen? Could some have been in the pocket of George Washington or of Ben Franklin or whoever? And where since then? These came from New York, where they were found in a home of long standing. So looking at them in my hand and feeling that I am part of their history is a good feeling.

My favorite part is sharing the education. I am continually learning and sharing, free with a smile!

The people I interact with, be they dealers or fellow collectors. It is what makes this hobby so great.

I have always loved history so I love to read and study the back stories of coins and their significance in history. This past year I have expanded my collecting horizons because I became involved in my local coin club and the ANA, and I have really enjoyed the social aspect of getting to know other collectors and meeting together with them and going to coin shows.

While it’s hard to pinpoint one favorite part of collecting, I will have to say for myself it’s when I go to my special place and crack open the “coin closet.” I stand momentarily in the awesomeness and glory of my hard work and I inventory my latest finds/purchases. I sort the precious coins away while looking at past discoveries and purchases. Favorite part I guess is being surrounded by all that you lovingly acquired!
