From the Oct. 19 Numismatic News E-Newsletter:
Will rare paper money hold its value better than silver?
Here are some answers sent from our e-newsletter readers to Editor Dave Harper.
To a degree, paper money will hold value against silver. This depends on the main factor of knowledgeable collectors. Yes, I have seen some people try and sell paper. This depends on wear, and being written on. Being written on, a dealer (won’t mention whom) told the potential seller one thing. Writing on a bill is the kiss of death. Also, folding takes away the value as well. Natural wear will detract some value, but not by much.
In most cases, silver will maintain inflation. I for one, have made a small sum in this. Yes, it did cover a needed bill or two when the time came.
Be wise, and do your homework. It will pay off!

While my 1907 Hillegas $10 Gold Certificate is a fine note to include in my overall collection, it does not compare well with the silver coins I own. Take away the design and artistic value on the coins, and you still have the silver that is worth something. Take away the same with any note, and all you’ll have left is a piece of paper.

I have been watching the same hometown note from the same company for four years now. It hasn’t sold but doubled in price. I am tempted to offer them a little less than their original price! Ha!
