Shows Indicate Strong Buyer Market
The business of coins is no different than any other business. Innovation is necessary and inevitable. The Central States Numismatic Society should be congratulated for innovation as the organization marks its 85th-anniversary convention in May. The convention will be held in Schaumburg, Ill.
The CSNS may be a club, but it has a commercial aspect. The club recently announced it will honor each of the 13 states one at a time that are represented by the CSNS. This will be done by giving away the fixed number of 3,000 mint-condition commemorative Statehood quarters, for this show those being quarters honoring Iowa. The other 12 states will be acknowledged the same way throughout the following dozen CSNS shows. The coins are encapsulated by ANACS with a special insert label identifying the CSNS convention at which they are given away. Specially labeled and sample slabs are increasingly becoming a collectible. David Schwager’s catalog, Sample Slabs, catalogs 760 types!
New U.S. Mint product sales indicate collectors are active. The CSNS show will likely follow the recent pattern of major shows, a pattern that indicates a very strong buyer market regardless of whether the coins are rare or reasonably available. More good news: the Mint sold 40 percent of its maximum authorized mintage of its 2024 Liberty and Britannia proof gold $100 coin and proof silver medal within the first four days of sales.
Gold coins continue to glimmer as this commentary is being written, outshining the bond market and dollar on the international markets. Collectors and investors are jointly enjoying the tight trading range within which both the yellow metal and silver have continued to be valued.
