Chester Arthur is one popular president.
Just a few weeks into sales, collectors have purchased 81,954 25-count rolls of the $1 coins. That makes him the second most popular president in $1 coin roll sales, trailing only President Abraham Lincoln, whose 2010 presidential $1 coin sold 97,575 rolls. Of course back then, collectors could find the Lincoln dollars in change. Not so with President Arthur.
The question remains, however, why collectors are ordering an even amount of Philadelphia and Denver mintmarked 100-coin bags and $500 boxes, while the $250 box saw twice as many orders for the Philadelphia mintmark.
The 2012 Presidential $1 uncirculated set containing Philadelphia and Denver mintmarks, is off to a good start with 20,996 sets sold. That’s almost a third of the 2011 set total of 65,481.
Sales of the four-coin proof gold Eagle set rose by 27 to 18,146.
The 5-ounce silver America the Beautiful coins saw minimal sales for the collector coins and none for bullion. Feeling the impact of silver at $29 an ounce?
