A pair of previously unknown coin boards has surfaced in a hoard acquired by author David W. Lange, he announced May 20.
The first is a Whitman Publishing Company board for Mercury dimes printed in 1939. All previously known examples of this board have the word ?COLLECTION? in smaller print than the main title, ?MERCURY HEAD DIMES.? On the newly discovered board, ?COLLECTION? is printed in letters the same size as in the main title. Lange has assigned catalog number W10?D2h for this variety.
The other new discovery is a variety of Whitman board dating 1939-40. It is a Third Edition entry for two-cent and nickel three-cent pieces, a title previously confirmed only in the Second Edition. Whitman boards of the Third Edition are known with either cloth-like or leatherette textures to their face paper, and this new discovery has the latter. Lange reserved catalog number W2?A3b in his book, Coin Collecting Boards of the 1930s & 1940s: A Complete History, Catalog and Value Guide, on the assumption that it might one day surface.
