More details are being released regarding the 2006 Return to Monticello nickel, including the location of the mintmark.
The ?P? and ?D? mintmarks will be placed under the date on the obverse.
On obverse the coin features a front-facing portrait of Thomas Jefferson by Artistic Infusion Program artist Jamie Franki of Concord, N.C. U.S. Mint sculptor-engraver Donna Weaver will sculpt the new nickel?s obverse.
On reverse the coin will feature Felix Schlag?s 1938 rendition of President Thomas Jefferson?s Virginia home of Monticello. Schlag?s initials will be located at the base of Monticello on the far right side.
Franki?s initials will be placed on the right lapel near the border, while Weaver?s initials will be included on the left lapel. Both will be incused.
U.S. Mint sculptor-engraver John Mercanti restored Schlag?s original artwork.
The Return to Monticello nickel is the last in the U.S. Mint?s Westward Journey Nickel Series.
