The Numismatist of the Year Award will be given to David W. Lange by the American Numismatic Association during its World’s Fair of Money in early August in Denver.

Lange currently is research director for Numismatic Guaranty Corporation of Sarasota, Fla.

He first became a member of ANA in 1978.

He joined NGC in 1994.

Lange has written nine books. He has hundreds of articles to his credit.

He has taught many courses at the ANA’s annual Summer Seminar at its headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo.

In 2009 ANA gave him its Lifetime Achievement Award.

He is a member of a long list of other hobby organizations.

He took leadership roles in a number of them.

He has served as president of the Pacific Coast Numismatic Society, the California State Numismatic Association and the New Jersey Numismatic Society.

“I am so proud that our own Dave Lange has been honored with this important award,” said Mark Salzberg, chairman of NGC, who is himself a previous winner of the award in 2006.

“Over the course of the 23 years that we have worked together I have witnessed first-hand the extent of his knowledge and his commitment to the hobby. Congratulations, Dave!” Salzberg said.

As editor of Numismatic News, all I can do is echo Salzberg’s comments by offering my congratulations.

I have been fortunate to know Dave since his club leadership days.

In my opinion, this recognition is well deserved.

Lange said, “I’m truly honored to be recognized by the ANA with such a significant award.”

He also reminisced a bit when he said, “When I joined the Association in 1978 as a young adult, it was with some uncertainty as to what it would offer me, but my only regret has been that I was not introduced to it in childhood.

“My fascination with coins began as soon as I learned to read, and it’s been a wonderful journey of discovery. I’m pleased to be able to give back to the hobby as a Summer Seminar instructor for the past 20-plus years and as a columnist for the ANA’s journal since 1988.”

Well said, Dave.

What makes this recognition so special is it highlights a familiar path taken by so many active numismatists.

They began in childhood, and whoosh, they go on to incredible achievements.

It is nice to see ANA extend this honor to such a worthy recipient.

Well done, ANA.

Well done, Dave Lange.
