Collectors often ask that question.
It is too bad many of them are not adventurous enough to go and find out.
However, a copy of “TNA News” has crossed my desk and it tells of many things that are going on in the great state of Texas.
The TNA has a financial assistance program.
Treasurer Jack Gilbert issued a call for entries to a drawing that will do a lot of good for a lot of people.
Deadline for submission is Nov. 30.
One entry must be sent for each drawing that will be held in early December.
There are four drawings.
The big one that everyone should be drooling over and perhaps be a little jealous of Texas collectors is the ANA Seminar Grant.
If you have never been to an American Numismatic Association Summer Seminar held in late June in Colorado Springs, Colo., this is a wonderful opportunity.
TNA pays tuition and travel expenses to two individuals to go to this nearly week-long event (there are two sessions of identical lengths).
If you think you might be eligible, email Gilbert at gilbj@yahoo.com.
And, as the late-night offers exclaim, “That’s not all.”
TNA also funds a Library Grant.
Five members (or member clubs) will win a $125 grant each to expand their personal or club libaries. Members must have been in good standing for the prior two years.
The Grant to Promote Numismatics goes to clubs. Cited is a prior winner, the NorthEast Tarrant Coin Club used funds to rent space and hold educational presentations.
A Grant to Promote Young Numismatists goes to clubs to create a program for YNs. Our future depends on efforts like this and TNA is in there making it happen.
These four grant programs are worthy.
They show that Texas hobbyists are in the right place at the right time.
They also answer the question of what good clubs are.
As you can seen, TNA shows it does a lot of good.
The members that make all this possible deserve a pat on the back.
Buzz blogger Dave Harper has twice won the Numismatic Literary Guild Award for Best Blog and is editor of the weekly newspaper "Numismatic News."
