Reader Andy Lustig says hobbyists at the online Collectors Universe Forum in December took an interest in the low-mintage ?W? uncirculated platinum American Eagles and urged each other to buy.
By Lustig?s count, forum participants accounted for 635 out of approximately 2,500 one-ounce coins that were sold. Responses were still coming in as this was written.
Lustig said one of the members made compelling projections on the final mintages, which appear to have been dead on.
More responses are expected to arrive in the Numismatic News office, but it is already clear that forum participants purchased more than 20 percent of the available supply of the coins.
