Civil Rights Act coin advances

Commemoration of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and of the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr is the joint subject matter of two bills which passed on the unanimous consent calendar on April 1.

Commemoration of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and of the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr is the joint subject matter of two bills, H.R. 2040, and S. 1437, the House version of which passed on the unanimous consent calendar on April 1. The bill now goes to the Senate which has the option of considering either measure.

H.R. 2040 would require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of the semicentennial of the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

The coin specs: not more than 350,000 $1 coins with a 2014 date with a $10 surcharge to be used by the United Negro College fund.

Action now shifts to the Senate where the House bill is likely to be considered.
