Eric Brothers, a regular contributor to Numismatic News, recently received a writing award from the Numismatic Literary Guild (NLG). He won in the Numismatic Columns or Articles category, “World Coins (1801 to Date),” for his article, “The British Trade Dollar: Commercial Coin of the Empire,” which was published in the American Numismatic Society’s ANS Magazine in the Winter of 2025. The article discusses the financial and economic situation in the British Empire that led to the creation and production of the British Trade Dollar, and its export to China and elsewhere in East Asia. Brothers regularly writes on U.S. and world coins that have been exported internationally, including China, where they received chopmarks.
Brothers has been a numismatic author for over twenty years. During that time, his written work has been published in Numismatic News, ANS Magazine, Palm Beach Coin News, CDN Monthly Newsletter, Financial History, Coins, The Numismatist, and other publications. He authored the opening article in the 2027 edition of Whitman Publishers’ A Guide Book of United States Coins (The Red Book), “Celebrating 250 Years of American Numismatic History,” and wrote an article on David Rittenhouse for Whitman’s 10th edition (2026) of Mega Red.
In 2016, he was awarded the American Numismatic Association’s (ANA’s) First Place Heath Literary Award for his article, “The Brilliant & Corrupt Franklin Peale,” published in the October 2015 issue of The Numismatist. Over the years, Brothers has earned other literary awards from the NLG and the ANA. He has been an active member of the American Numismatic Society since 2023 and has written for them since 2022. He is also a member of the Palm Beach Coin Club, the Numismatic Literary Guild, the Chopmark Collectors Club, and the American Numismatic Association.
