VNA holds 54th convention


A total of 81 dealers from 15 states filled 150 tables at the Virginia Numismatic Association’s 54th Annual Convention, Coin & Currency Show held Sept. 28-30 at the Fredericksburg, Va., Expo and Conference Center.

More than 1,120 people attended the show, according to organizers. The Culpeper, Rappahannock Area Coin Club and Warrenton Coin Club hosted.

Following are highlights of the event:

• Token and medal author David Schenkman was the banquet speaker on the topic, “Remembrances of Collecting and Cataloging Virginia Tokens.”

• The auction of early U.S. coppers from the estate of Vincent W. Alones drew great interest, organizers reported.

• Lee Morrison, retired postmaster and member of the Warrenton Stamp and Coin Club, displayed his collection of U.S. stamps and historic items on the theme of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

• Simcha Kuritzky received both first and second place honors for his exhibits “1986 Singapore Tiger Commemoratives of Tan Seng Yong” and “ANA First Place Class Awards,” respectively. Third prize went to Eric Schena for “Ingle System Scrip of the Mid-Atlantic Region.”

• Educational presentations were “Are You Addicted to Coins? Signs to Look for and Treatments to Consider” by Mike Shutty, “Digital Coin Photography” by David Barrette, “Fredericksburg Civil War Currency” by John Philips, “History of the Creation of the Winged Liberty Dime” by George Cash, and “U.S. Large Cents Hypothesis; Theory and Vincent W. Alones” by Thomas Wood, Ph.D.

• A Boy Scout Coin Collecting Merit Badge Workshop was attended by 21 Scouts, 19 of whom were certified.

Next year’s convention is set for Sept. 27-29 at the same location.
