Theft reward nears $160,000

Almost $160,000 is now being offered as a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thief or thieves who recently stole rare coins from longtime dealer Julian M. Leidman of Silver Spring, Md.

The fund, organized by the Professional Numismatists Guild, reflects support for Leidman from not only the PNG membership, but also from other professionals and organizations in the numismatic field.

The theft occurred on Oct. 11, 2009, as Leidman was returning home from a coin show in Stamford, Conn. His inventory of over 1,000 coins and notes was stolen when his minivan was broken into during a stop in Pine Brook, N.J.

Two bags of clothing and Leidman’s laptop computer also were taken through a smashed passenger window.

“The PNG has a long history of offering rewards to help catch thieves of numismatic property,” said Robert Brueggeman, PNG executive director.
