Stack’s Offers World Paper Money Rarities

With the ANA World’s Fair of Money next month, consignments are pouring in and collectors are getting their wallets ready. Stack’s Bowers is no exception to this. For the World Paper Money session, they have dug into their treasure trove and pulled out some of the best.

The first item up for grabs is an intricately designed 10,000 rupees from the Reserve Bank of India. This item is graded Specimen PMG About Unc 55. It is described as having “just a hint of circulation, but maintaining all pertinent detail with exquisite centering.” Also, “issued notes of this type are very scarce since being demonetized as the majority were returned to banks, and their value was simply too high for the time to not be redeemed by most. This specimen variety, being the only known example, hasn’t surfaced in over half a decade, and is the first of its kind we have offered.” The estimate for this note is between $150,000-170,000. At the time of this writing, the opening bid is $70,000.

The next item up for grabs may seem familiar to some readers who read Kerry Rodgers’ story about the Dix Noonan Webb sale in the April issue of Bank Note Reporter. The item in that sale was a pair of Reserve Bank of India Haj Rs 100 that were sold separately graded PMG30 VF. The note being offered by Stack’s is a Reserve Bank of India Haj 100 rupees graded PMG Extremely Fine 40. It is described as “boasting a vibrant red color with orange and yellow hues throughout.” Also, “this series in its entirety rivals that of the Zanzibar series, the PRC series, and German East African series on the Rushmore of World Paper Notes…” The estimate for this item is between $75,000-80,000. We look forward to what these notes will bring at the auction block!
