Andrew Mellon left the office of Secretary of the Treasury in 1932, but now from the estate of his son, Paul, collectors will find uncut sheets of paper money issued during his father’s term of office in a Nov. 20 auction to be conducted in New York City by Spink Smythe.

Included will be the third, seventh and 10th uncut sheets printed of the small-size Series 1928 Silver Certificates.

Introduction of small-size notes was a major effort undertaken while Mellon was in office.

“These happen to be the sheets that were given to Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon on or about July 29, 1929, when these went into circulation, and are the lowest serial numbered sheets available to collectors,” says Jim Fitzgerald, senior vice president of Spink Smythe.

The third sheet has serial numbers of A00000025-36A. The seventh sheet is 73-84A and the tenth sheet is 109-120A.

They are graded gem uncirculated, choice uncirculated and about uncirculated, respectively. Estimates are $4,000-$6,000,  $3,000-$5,000 and $3,000-$5,000, respectively.

Sheets at the time featured just 12 notes.

Sheet three, is described as having “two minuscule paper pulls from when the sheet was previously mounted to a larger sheet of paper within a plastic frame. These serial numbers now represent the lowest available numbers (by far) to enter the community; as the previous low was Sheet 17.”
