Shield cents now in rolls

Sales of the new Union Shield cent in two-roll sets was slated by the Mint to begin on its Web site April 8.

Price of the set is $8.95 plus $4.95 per order for shipping and handling.

Each set will contain a 50-coin roll of uncirculated Philadelphia cents and a 50-coin roll of uncirculated Denver coins.

The Mint wraps the rolls in its own paper wrapper.

This year marks the introduction of the new ongoing Union Shield design to replace the Memorial reverse last used in 2008 and following the four Lincoln birth bicentennial designs of 2009.

The Shield symbolizes the United States as a single and united country. The Mint says the Shield was created by Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer Lyndall Bass and executed by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.

A new design for the 2010 cent was authorized in 2005 in the same legislation that authorized the 2009 commemorative cent designs.

No further design changes for the cent are in the pipeline and this design is expected to be used for many years to come.

Visit the Mint’s Web site at www.usmint.gov. Orders may also be placed by telephone by calling (800) USA-MINT.
