Relatives help launch Garfield $1

Great-grandson Rudolph Garfield helped introduce the James A. Garfield Presidential dollar coin Nov. 17 in Mentor, Ohio, the 20th President’s home.

He joined U.S. Mint Acting Associate Director for Manufacturing Marc Landry and Garfield biographer Dr. Allan Peskin for a ceremonial coin pour of the new coins.

age of two, drove canal boat teams to earn money for college, became a classics professor and college president, rose to brigadier general in the Civil War, and enjoyed a long, distinguished career in the U.S. Congress.”

Peskin served as the event’s keynote speaker, the Mint reported. He is the author of Garfield, the definitive biography of the former President who was shot by an assassin Sept. 6, 1881, in a Washington, D.C., railroad station just four months into his term. He died Sept. 19, 1881.

Other Garfield family members were present as was a color guard.

After the ceremony, the public was able to buy the 25-coin rolls for the $25 face value.

Collectors can purchase rolls from the U.S. Mint for $39.95 apiece. The Mint is selling uncirculated Philadelphia and uncirculated Denver Mint rolls. There is a $4.95 handling charge for each order.
