RSM Coin to Commemorate Apollo 11 Landing

RCM Apollo 11 Coins

The U.S. half dollar coin in the lower left depicts the iconic first step on the Moon’s surface with the inscription MERCURY GEMINI APOLLO. The Spanish coin in the upper right celebrates the contribution of the Spanish facilities to the historic Moon landing.

When the Apollo 11 Lunar Module landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969, three facilities assisted.  These facilities are located in Gladstone, Calif., Camberra, Australia and Robledo de Chavela (Madrid, Spain). They guaranteed the monitoring of the interplanetary spacecraft 24 hour a day, 365 days a year.  The monitoring covered 120 degrees each of the airspace of the Earth.

To commemorate man’s arrival to the moon and the contribution of the Spanish facility to this event, the Royal Spanish Mint (RSM) has released a special 8 reales .925 silver coin.

The reverse of the coin depicts one monitoring antenna based in Spain, the Lunar Module, and as a background, the Moon.  The obverse depicts a portrait of His Majesty King Don Felipe VI.

Both coins come packaged together in an attractive box with certificate of authenticity.

The RSM reached an agreement with the US Mint to develop a joint product of two coins in one package. One coin will be the 8 reales coin from Royal Spanish Mint and the other one will be the curved half-dollar clad coin. The maximum mintage of the set of two coins will be 5,000 units.  The Spanish 8 reales coin will also have a mintage of an additional 5,000 sold in a single case.
