Obama signs Marshals commem bill


The U.S. Marshal’s Service founding in 1789 was ordered commemorated April 2 when President Barack Obama signed a three-coin commemorative package into law.

Marking its 225th anniversary in 2015 will be up to 100,000 $5 gold coins, 500,000 silver dollars and no more than 750,000 copper-nickel half dollars. Proof and uncirculated examples are likely to be issued.

A common element of the precious metal coins will be the service star that is distinctive of the federal service of this group whose creation was signed into law by George Washington.

The law actually says that “The images for the designs of coins issued under this Act shall be selected on the basis of the realism and historical accuracy of the images and on the extent to which the images are reminiscent of the dramatic and beautiful artwork on coins of the so-called `Golden Age of Coinage’ in the United States.”

This refers to designs such as the Buffalo nickel, Saint-Gaudens gold eagle and double eagle struck from 1907 to 1933, Lincoln cent, Mercury dime and Walking Liberty half dollar.
