From the July 3, Numismatic News E-NewsLetter

Do you purchase coin lots when adding to your collection? Why or why not?

Here are some answers sent from our e-newsletter readers.

I have searched for and bought coin lots locally for many years. Putting ads in local papers and being able to buy coins and compete “collections” has helped me build the majority of my collection. It’s amazing what has been squirreled away over the years by folks. I’ve come onto some great stuff!
Plus… it’s always exciting wondering what you’ll find!

Yes, I do whenever possible. There’s always something I can use someone else’s collection for the most part and if not  can sell the collection and get my money back

I do… but perhaps not for the reasons you might assume. I recently lost my coin collecting partner that used to “split” coin lots with me – I love constitutional silver and he lived numismatics (real coin collecting) – thus we would purchase coin lots together – and share the love and joy of the “hunt,” each appreciating the underlying value the other loved. And depending upon what treasures (if any) we discovered, we split the relative “cost” – often each of us getting a great “bargain.”

Yes, I do buy coin lots when adding to my collection because I can get it for a better price or in bulk. It is nice for foreign coins because you can just get a whole bunch of random coins and dates that you may have not had before for something like 25 cents a coin.

I’ve never purchased coin lots, though in three decades I’ve purchased lots of coins. I mostly buy individual coins and some coin sets.

Yes, I gladly purchase entire lot deals. Many times, they are from friends who know I am a serious collector. Working in Law Enforcement for over 30 years, I have met many nice people who also share my passion of coin collecting. They offer me entire collections or lots, which I pick, and then most times pass them on to our younger collectors within our local coin club or State Coin CLub (VNA).

I have only bought one coin lot before, a lot of Roosevelt SMS/proof dimes from 1965-2009, but it filled a lot of holes in my collection that I wouldn’t have been able to get in change for a great price.

Coin lots can be a great way to add to a collection!
