The rapidly rising price of silver bullion prompted the U.S. Mint to raise the fee it charges its authorized purchasers for each silver American Eagle bullion coin from $1.50 to $2.

This is added to the price of the bullion in the coin and covers the Mint’s cost associated with production and marketing.

Unlike the proof silver American Eagles, the regular bullion version is not available to collectors directly from the Mint. Instead, a small network of authorized purchasers, which meet certain financial and marketing criteria buy them from the Mint and then sell them into the secondary investment market.
