Mint Stats: Weak demand looks puzzling

You already know about the 25th anniversary American Eagle set sellout from the front page, so let’s ask the really important question: Is there something about the 2011-W uncirculated silver American Eagle collector coin where once it is sold it won’t stay sold? We could blame changing prices before, but this week the sales total plunged by 12,464 to 183,043 without a price adjustment. What’s up?

The sales total of the 5-ounce Grand Canyon uncirculated collector coin saw the number fall by one coin to 26,024. The asterisk is put back denoting the coin is not being offered any longer. It is not on the Mint website, but the total is almost 1,000 lower than the putative number available.

October has turned into the lowest sales month for the one-ounce American Eagle bullion coin. The 46,000 sold are 10,000 fewer than the next lowest month recorded in June. Unless demand picks up substantially in November and December, the overall 2011 sales total will fall for the second year in a row.
