Mint Statistics: Holiday demand pushes up proofs

Holiday shopping seems to be boosting certain Mint sales items. The 2018 clad proof set jumped by 10,711 to 406,984. Silver proof sets rose by 6,065 to 264,239. The puzzle is why clad sets outsell silver when silver sets tend to hold their value better. Is it simply the lower price?

The Mint started moving some Eagle bullion coins. The silver version saw 680,000 shipped to Authorized Purchasers. Will demand push the monthly number above the 1,430,000 sold in October? We’ll see. Buyers are battling lower bullion prices interrupted by periodic jumps when the stock market has fainting spells.

There were 4,000 one-ounce gold Eagles sold, as well as 2,000 half-ounce Eagles and 10,000 tenth-ounce Eagles. This adds up to 6,000 ounces of precious metal.

The 2018-S Limited Edition Silver Proof Set sales pace continues to slow with 1,549 sold.
