Lincoln theme of ANA coin week

National Coin Week is slated for April 19-25 and its theme will be “Lincoln’s Legacy: A Nation United,” the American Numismatic Association has announced.

The theme was determined by a competition that elicited more than 40 submissions to the ANA. The winner was Ryan Berman of Baltimore.

Berman’s prize was a Fourth Issue 50-cent Fractional Currency note that carries Lincoln’s portrait.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent.

Other ANA members receiving prizes were Simon Beier of Brick, N.J., for “Lincoln: A Man of Common Cents,” Dennis Berube of Brick, N.J., for “Coins Communicate Lincoln’s Legacy,” and David Sperry of Los Altos, Calif., for “Lincoln’s Legacy Makes Good Cents.”

National Coin Week will feature an ANA scavenger hunt. Players will report their results online on the ANA Web site at www.money.org.

The ANA’s Web site will also feature aids to local clubs and collectors in creating local observances of the week. These include a sample press release and proclamation, interactive flier, lesson plans for teachers and fun online games for kids and adults. There will also be images and articles posted relating to Lincoln.

There will be a special exhibit at the Edward C. Rochette Money Museum at ANA headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colo.

For more information, telephone the ANA at (719) 482-9814, e-mail ncw@money.org, or visit www.money.org (select “National Coin Week” from the “Numismatic Events” dropdown menu).
