Hutt River gets new prince

On Feb. 11, 2017, Prince Leonard abdicated as sovereign of the Principality of Hutt River in favor of his youngest son, Prince Graeme, Duke of Gilboa and Earl of Canan. Prince Leonard had served 46 years since founding the principality in 1970.

For the past 12 months, the principality has been preoccupied in a protracted court battle with the Australian Taxation Office. One consequence is that it has only now gotten around to honoring its new sovereign in coin.

A new $10 coin has been struck on a 32 mm nickel-plated flan. The obverse shows a bust of Prince Graeme. On the reverse are the prince’s arms. Mintage is 1,000. Those wishing to obtain one of the new $10s can email the Principality’s offices at huttriver@principality-hutt-river.org.

Prince Leonard celebrated his 93rd birthday on Aug. 27.
