Gold Eagle sales rate dropping

Sales of the 2011 proof gold American Eagle coin options slowed dramatically this week. Buyers grabbed just 4,090 more one-ounce coins, the most popular option so far. Also purchased were an additional 782 half-ounce pieces, 1,540 quarter ouncers and 3,025 tenth ouncers. The full set saw another 1,557 taken by collectors.

Compared to the 2010 offer last October, these numbers are weak.

The 2010 Hot Springs 5-ounce collector coin has not yet sold out six days into the sales period.

Also, Authorized Purchasers have not yet taken all of the initital supply of the 2011 Gettysburg and Glacier 5-ouncer bullion coins. The Mint could strike more if the market wants them, but will it? Let’s watch and see.

The full April Eagle sales numbers are listed. May started off with demand for 11,000 gold Eagles and 654,000 silver Eagles.
