Girl Scout Commem Designs Get Nod

Designs for a commemorative silver dollar honoring the Girl Scouts were endorsed by the Commission of Fine Arts when it met May 17.

The obverse design of featuring faces of three girls and a reverse design with stylized profiles of three girls in the trefoil logo are the same designs backed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.

The CFA suggested the words “Courage, Confidence, Character” replace the words “100 Years of Girl Scouting” and the number “100” be placed inside the trefoil on the obverse, said CFA Secretary Thomas Luebke.

Modern Commemorative Coins

It also suggested that the phrase “Girl Scouts” be placed on the reverse and “100 Years” be removed.

The CFA also reviewed designs for four congressional gold medals that honor native american tribes who served the U.S. military as code talkers during the 20th century. It endorsed designs for medals honoring the Comanche Nation, Kiowa tribe, Tlingit Tribe and Santee Dakota Sioux Tribe.

Luebke said the CFA endorsed designs that were recommended by the tribes. It recommended that the insignias on the Comanche Nation reverse design No. 2 be reduced to be contained within the circular border and that the circular outline on the rider’s shield be eliminated.

It chose reverse No. 1 and its depiction of an eagle for the Dakota Sioux medal, the design preferred by the tribe. CCAC chose reverse No. 2.

It asked that the background of the buffalo emblem on the reverse of the Kiowa design No. 2 be changed to one color.

CFA backed reverse No. 2 for the Tlingit medal, but did not agree with the CCAC rrecommendation to extend the circular border behind the whale’s tale.
