Garden gold sells

Seventy-seven U.S. $20 gold pieces dug up in a British garden sold for over $154,000 at a Morton & Eden auction conducted Nov. 29-30 in London in association with Sotheby’s.

James Morton, the auctioneer, said each of the 10 coins sold individually, as well as the price paid for 67 coins sold as one lot, exceeded pre-sale estimates.

The most valuable individual $20 coin sold, according to Morton, was $7,536 paid for an 1875-CC piece decribed in the catalog as having a rim bruise but being a good fine.

Originally, the coins had been buried by Jewish refugees who feared an imminent Nazi invasion of Britain in 1940. However, Martin Sulzbacher’s brother, who buried the coins, was killed in an air raid, so these coins were not rediscovered until 2007 and returned to the family, said Sulzbacher’s son.
