Four firms certify coins on eBay

A new policy by eBay to accept online auction listings of certified coins only if they are from four grading service companies was lauded by the American Numismatic Association Sept. 18.

?The ANA supports this effort to improve consumer protection for people buying and selling coins on eBay,? said Barry Stuppler, ANA president.
The four services are the Numismatic Guaranty Corp./Numismatic Conservation Services, Professional Coin Grading Service, Independent Coin Grading and ANACS.

?If the coin listed is not certified by one of the above authorized grading companies, the coin is considered raw/uncertified and is subject to additional requirements for their sale,? according to a posting on eBay at http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/selling-coins.html.

ANA was asked by eBay for input on the matter in February and in August the board voted to recommend that eBay go forward with the policy change only if it was based on the results of a Professional Numismatists Guild-Industry Council for Tangible Assets grading service survey taken in 2006.
