Focus shifts to silver from gold

Proof silver American Eagle sales have jumped by 434,492 since the last report two weeks ago. The running total is now 707,704. It looks like 1 million should be easily reached if the Mint has that many to sell.

The unfortunate gap in coverage was due to a Mint computer glitch.

But even with two weeks’ of sales, the numbers for the proof gold American Eagles look so yesterday. The half-ounce number is up by 2,088 to 8,119, the quarter ounce is up by 883 to 6,077, the tenth ounce is up by 2,528 to 15,337 and the four-coin set is up 2,233 to 25,697. None of these gold categories is close to a sellout. Many collectors have clearly shifted focus to the silver proof.

I put the asterisk on the 2009 D.C. and Territories silver quarter set. The number is still changing, but sales ended some while back.

Demand for Mary Todd Lincoln dollar rolls has put some life into the Presidential dollar category.
