Are Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies a threat to the coin collecting hobby?

Here are some answers sent in from our E-Newsletter readers

No. The more people are satisfied with fake coins, the more real coins for me.

That’s like asking if the price of peanut butter is affecting ice cream. The answer is no. The insane overproduction of products coming out of the Mint and 75 different labels for the same coin is what is killing the coin market.

Paul Bechtoldt
Peckville, Pa.

I am not connected with the problem as I only collect pre-1960 coins, but if coins are gradually made redundant, it could have a long-term effect on our hobby.

Nigel Reid
Middlesex, England

No. Checks did not stop coin collecting, and neither did credit cards. So far, the use of iPhones has not hurt the hobby.

If anything, it should spark some interest in that old fashion way of commerce.

No, counterfeit coins and too many mint issues are a threat.

Yes, they are a threat to coins because they will replace coins.
