From the September 6 Numismatic News E-Letter

If you had an unlimited budget, would you buy an 1879 Coiled Hair Stella or an 1894-S Barber dime?

Here are some answers sent in from our E-Newsletter reader

I have collected many things in the past (baseball cards, stamps, fossils, wildflowers, etc.)  Right now I am collecting books – primarily Zane Gray and John Grisham.  In general, once I get two of anything I start thinking maybe I should start a collection.

Books, historical documents, antiquities, Texas items (in particular El Paso), military and other historic things (example: I own original charcoal paintings of Philip Sheridan and his wife that were commissioned by them and hung in their home – given to me by a descendant), and I have a group of things signed or owned by John Wesley Hardin, which I like because of the local connection, not because he was a nice guy.

My grandmother collected stamps and left them for me. I’ve gone through all the albums but have no passion for collecting them. I bought an old car on the cheap, a 1940 Packard touring sedan, that I drive to shows occasionally or around our neighborhood but don’t restore or collect them. I’m thinking hard about whether I should liquidate or continue collecting coins. I just turned 80.

Kentucky Bourbon can be a good investment (if you can keep from opening it.) It can be like collecting coins at about 147 bottles per barrel. It is very limited, my favorite Old Rip Van Winkle.
