American Innovation 2018 $1 Reverse Proof Introductory Coin

On August 14, the United States Mint began taking orders for the American Innovation 2018 $1 Reverse Proof Introductory Coin.  The United States Mint American Innovation $1 Coin Program is a multi-year series to honor innovation and innovators with $1 coins from each State, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands.

One of the Nation’s greatest strengths is its entrepreneurial spirit and the remarkable innovation and discovery it unleashes. The United States Mint is proud to celebrate innovation and honor the spirit of America with the 2018 American Innovation $1 Reverse Proof Introductory Coin.

This beautiful reverse proof coin features an inverted proof finish. The background is frosted, while all design elements are polished to the same mirror-like finish.  The metal composition consists of 6 percent zinc, 3.5 percent manganese, 2 percent nickel with the balance being copper.

The 2018 United States Mint American Innovation $1 Reverse Proof Introductory Coin reverse design features George Washington’s signature and the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “AMERICAN INNOVATORS.” The stylized gears represent industry and innovation. The design also includes the inscription “SIGNED FIRST PATENT” under Washington’s signature.

The obverse design features a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty in profile with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1.”

The edge-incused inscriptions are “2018,” “S” mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM”.

The coins are housed in a stylish and informational four-panel envelope packaging with imbedded Certificate of Authenticity and protective outer sleeve.

Minted at the San Francisco Mint, a mintage limit of 75,000 has been set.  The Mint has also indicated a household order limit of five.  The retail price is $9.95.

Collectors are also able to purchase the 2018 American Innovation Proof Coin from the Mint for $6.95.  Since its release, 184,544 of the proof option have been sold.  In addition, collectors can purchase bags and rolls of the circulating variation of this coin, which are minted in Denver and Philadelphia.  To date, 25,640 of the 25-count rolls have been sold, along with 5,889 of the $100 bags.

Following the release of the introductory coin, four new $1 coins with distinctive reverse designs will be released each year from 2019 through 2032 in the order the states ratified the Constitution of the United States or were admitted to the Union. Once a coin is issued for each state, coins will be released for the District of Columbia and the territories.
