American Innovation™ $1 from Delaware Released

Last year, the United States Mint launched the American Innovation $1 Coin Program with the release of its introductory coin. Now, in 2019, the program truly gets underway. The 2019 Delaware $1 Coin is the first of a 14-year, 56-coin series recognizing innovation and inventions in each of the 50 States, District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories. Three more coins will be released in 2019, then four each year through 2032!

The mission of this program is to symbolize quintessential American traits – the willingness to explore, to discover and to create one’s own destiny. The program will showcase an innovation, inventor or group of inventors from each state or territory.

Minted at the United States Mints in Philadelphia and Denver, the first state featured, Delaware features a silhouette of Annie Jump Cannon, a Delaware-born astronomer who is internationally recognized for inventing a system for classifying the stars which is still in use today on the reverse.  Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ANNIE JUMP CANNON,” “CLASSIFYING THE STARS,” and “DELAWARE.”

The obverse design features a dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty in profile with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1.” The design also includes a privy mark of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation.

The edge-incused inscriptions are “2019,” mintmark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

The Mint began offering 25-coin rolls and 100-coin bags available in a P or D mintmark on Sept. 19.  There is no mintage limit and no product or household limits.  The $25-coin rolls sell for $32.95, while the 100-coin bags can be purchased for $111.95.

According to the Mint’s recently updated product release schedule, the American Innovation 2019 $1 Proof Set featuring proof coins of the first four releases, minted at the San Francisco facility, will be available on Oct. 11. Bags and rolls of the remaining issues will be available as follows: Pennsylvania on Oct. 24, New Jersey on Nov. 21 and Georgia on Dec. 19.

Orders can be placed now for the Delaware bags and rolls by visiting catalog.usmint.gov or calling 800-USA-MINT.
