Colorado launch June 14

The first-strike ceremony for the Colorado quarter was held May 24, setting the stage for the official launch of the coin on June 14.

No details about the launch ceremony were available as of presstime.

A delegation of Colorado officials led by Gov. Bill Owens were to have taken part in the first-strike ceremony at the U.S Mint at Denver.

Other dignitaries expected to be on hand included the Treasurer of the United States, Anna Escobedo Cabral.

The Colorado quarter depicts a sweeping view of the Rocky Mountains with evergreen trees and a banner carrying the inscription, ?Colorful Colorado.?

The quarter also bears the inscriptions ?Colorado? and ?1876.?

Colorado was admitted into the Union on Aug. 1, 1876, becoming the nation?s 38th state.

The Colorado quarter is the third to be released by the U.S. Mint in 2006, and is the 38th in the 50 States Quarters Program.
