Chet Krause

Obsolete bank notes from the Chet Krause collection will be among the highlights of Stack’s Baltimore sale March 2-3 at the Sheraton Inner Harbor Hotel.

The founder of Numismatic News has been selling off his collections. This is the second part of the obsoletes offering.

Almost 275 notes are in the Krause Collection to be sold. Among them is the first portion of his scrip note collection.

A among the obsolete highlights is an unlisted and possibly unique Kenosha County Bank $2 proof note is called about uncirculated that has undergone some minor expert restorations, though these are insignificant, according to the cataloger.

Another $2 comes from the Wisconsin Bank of Madison. It is an archival Specimen with exceptional color used to illustrate the variety in both the Haxby and Krause references.

Among the highlights of the coins to go on the block is an MS-65 1929 gold $20 as graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service.

The cataloger notes that only five examples have been certified as finer.

Other double eagles to go on the block include a PCGS AU-50 1873-CC Liberty Head and an MS-61 1885-CC Liberty Head.

A pair of 1924-S $20s will be sold. Both are graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corp. One is MS-65 and the other is MS-64.

Among the 18th century U.S. issues is an example of the 1792 half disme. It is described as having the sharpness of a VF but probably cleaned decades ago.

A PCGS MS-63 1795 silver dollar will highlight this denomination. The BB-52, example is Rarity-2.

“This B-15, Centered Draped Bust example is a beautiful, boldly struck coin with satiny surfaces,” the firm says.

Three Gobrecht pattern silver dollars will cross the block. The first is an 1836 J-58 restrike in PCGS Proof-58 with CAC sticker. The second is an 1838 J-84 in PCGS Proof-64. The third is another J-84 graded Proof-64 by NGC.
