Canada leads Coin of the Year nominations

Powerhouses or up-and-comers? Who should get the lion’s share of attention as the 100 nominations for Coin of the Year are discussed?

Perennial powerhouse Canada came away with nine nominations on the list that begins the competition to determine the winner of the 2019 Coin of the Year Award, which is sponsored by World Coin News, sister publication to Numismatic News.

It was followed by eight nominations for Australia and six for the People’s Republic of China.

Other historically strong contenders Finland, France, and South Africa registered five nominations each.

However, a surprise up-and-comer is the Cook Islands, a tiny Pacific entity with a population of hardly more than 60,000 people. It garnered five nominations.

This is a tribute to its competent contract coiners issuing attractive work in its name.

Austria, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States reached the list with four nominations each.

This list of 11 countries has more than half of all nominations at 59, while 32 issuers divvy up the other 41 nominations.

There is a two-round voting process by an international panel of judges to determine the winners of the top award and 10 category awards.

Winners will be recognized on Feb. 2 at the World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany. All coins are dated 2017.
